What Are Cherry Angiomas?

Cherry angiomas are small skin lesions made of clusters of tiny blood vessels. They typically appear on the torso, arms, and legs, and are round, bright red to dark red, and often appear in groups. These bumps are usually 2-4mm in diameter and may be flat or slightly raised.

Cherry angiomas are common, harmless skin lesions.

Cherry angiomas are caused by localised growths of blood vessels.

What Causes Cherry Angiomas?

Cherry angiomas form due to an overgrowth of the endothelial cells that line the blood vessels. The exact cause is unknown, but they are strongly linked to ageing. Most adults develop them after age 30, and the number increases over time. Other factors may contribute:

  • Hormonal changes, particularly during pregnancy
  • Genetic mutations or family history
  • Exposure to certain chemicals (e.g., nitrogen mustard, bromides)
  • Eruptive angiomas may rarely be associated with medications or viral infections

Although harmless, these small red bumps can bleed if rubbed or scratched, which is why many people seek treatment.

How Are Cherry Angiomas Diagnosed?

Cherry angiomas are typically diagnosed through a visual skin examination. No tests are usually required. In some cases, a dermatoscope may be used to differentiate angiomas from other moles or suspicious skin lesions.

If a bump changes colour, size, or starts bleeding, it’s important to see a doctor to rule out more serious conditions.

Most cherry angiomas are easily diagnosed without tests.

Am i a good candidate for cherry angioma treatment?

Suitability depends on your skin type, your medical history, and your goals. During your consultation, our clinicians will assess these factors carefully before recommending any treatment. However, cherry angiomas are suitable for most adults in good health, with realistic expectations, and an interest in improving skin texture.

Frequently Asked Questions
Cherry Angioma Treatment

No, cherry angiomas are benign and not cancerous. They are cluster of tiny blood vessels and generally harmless to your health. However, if a lesion changes suddenly in size, shape, or colour, or starts bleeding, it’s important to have it checked by a healthcare provider. Book a free skin check at Queensland Skin and Laser for your peace of mind.

The exact cause of cherry angiomas isn’t fully understood. They develop from the overgrowth of tiny blood vessels in the skin. Factors that increase their likelihood include ageing, genetics, hormonal changes (such as pregnancy), and exposure to certain chemical. Cherry angiomas often increase in number with age.

Cherry angiomas can bleed because they are made of delicate blood vessels. Scratching, rubbing, or accidental trauma can cause minor bleeding. Lesions in areas exposed to frequent friction are more likely to bleed. Some people choose removal to prevent repeated bleeding or irritation.

Removal is typically for cosmetic reasons or to reduce bleeding. Treatment options include: IPL, laser therapy, cryotherapy, or electrocauterisation. If you’re considering removal, book a consultation with our experienced dermal clinicians to discuss the best method for you.

Sometimes. While treated lesions usually do not return in the same spot, new cherry angiomas can appear elsewhere. This is normal and harmless. Regular skin monitoring helps manage any new growths effectively.

Charry angiomas are small, round, smooth, and typically red or purplish. If a bump changes rapidly, bleeds without cause, gorws in an unusual way, or looks very different from other angiomas, it should be assessed by a qualified healthcare professional, who can visually examine you skin and recommend that safest next steps. Schedule a skin assessment in you’re unsure.

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
