What Is a Skin Cancer Check?
A skin cancer check is a detailed examination performed by a trained professional to identify any abnormal skin lesions or changes that may indicate skin cancer.
This process involves a full-body assessment, including the use of dermatoscopy, which allows for the magnified evaluation of skin components not visible to the naked eye. Early detection through regular skin checks is vital, as it enables prompt treatment, reducing the risk of cancer progression and the need for more invasive procedures.
What Areas can be treated?
Our clinic is equipped to assess and treat various areas of the body where skin cancer commonly develops. These include:
- Face and Neck: Due to frequent sun exposure, these areas are particularly susceptible to skin cancer.
- Arms and Hands: Often exposed to UV radiation, making them common sites for skin lesions.
- Legs and Feet: Especially in individuals who spend significant time outdoors.
- Torso: Including the back and chest, areas that may be overlooked during self-examinations.
Our comprehensive approach ensures that no area is neglected during skin cancer screenings. Book a bulk bill skin check today!
Candidates for BULK BILL Skin Checks
While everyone can benefit from regular skin examinations, certain individuals may have a higher risk and should consider more frequent checks:
- Individuals with Fair Skin: Lighter skin tones have less melanin, offering less natural protection against UV radiation.
- History of Sunburns: Past severe sunburns, especially during childhood, can increase the risk of developing skin cancer later in life.
- Family History: A familial predisposition to skin cancer necessitates vigilant monitoring.
- Outdoor Workers or Enthusiasts: Prolonged UV exposure due to occupational or recreational activities elevates risk.
- Individuals with Multiple Moles: A higher number of moles can indicate an increased risk, particularly if they are atypical.
If any of these factors apply to you, scheduling a regular bulk bill skin cancer check is advisable.
Skin Cancer Surgery & Treatment
At our Brisbane clinic, we offer a range of treatment options tailored to the type and stage of skin cancer diagnosed:
- Surgical Excision: The primary method for removing cancerous lesions, involving the surgical removal of the tumour along with a margin of healthy tissue to ensure complete excision.
- Cryotherapy: Utilising liquid nitrogen to freeze and destroy abnormal cells, suitable for certain precancerous conditions and small skin cancers.
- Topical Medications: Application of prescription creams that stimulate the immune system to attack cancerous cells, used for specific superficial skin cancers.
- Photodynamic Therapy (PDT): Combines a photosensitising agent with light exposure to destroy cancerous cells, effective for certain types of skin cancer and precancerous lesions.
Our experienced team will discuss the most appropriate treatment plan based on your individual diagnosis and health considerations.
Skin Cancer Surgery Process At
Queensland Skin And Laser
Consultation
Your journey begins with an in-depth consultation with Dr. Mark Chernoff where he will conduct a thorough skin examination. This includes:
- Detailed Medical History: Understanding your personal and family history related to skin conditions and sun exposure.
- Full-Body Skin Assessment: Utilising advanced diagnostic tools to meticulously examine your skin for any suspicious lesions or changes.
If an abnormality is detected, a biopsy may be performed to determine the nature of the lesion.
From Suspicious Spot to Safe Removal
Procedure
Should treatment be necessary, Dr. Mark Chernoff will remove the cancerous tissue along with a margin of healthy skin to ensure complete excision. All procedures are performed under local anaesthesia to maximise comfort.
Results
Post-procedure, the excised tissue is analysed to confirm complete removal of cancerous cells. Dr. Mark Chernoff will discuss the findings with you and outline any further steps if required.
Recovery
Recovery is usually straightforward with minimal downtime, although it varies depending on the procedure and individual factors. Detailed instructions are provided to promote healing and minimise infection risk, and follow-up appointments will be scheduled to monitor healing progress and detect any signs of recurrence early.
Adhering to post-operative care guidelines is crucial for optimal recovery and long-term skin health. At Queensland Skin and Laser, we are committed to supporting you through each stage of the process, ensuring the highest standards of care and personalised attention.
Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

Frequently Asked Questions
ABOUT SKIN CANCER Surgery
How do I know if a lesion needs surgical removal?
Not every spot requires surgery. After your skin check, Dr Chernoff will review your lesion’s appearance, history, and any biopsy results. Lesions that are cancerous or pre-cancerous are usually recommended for precise surgical removal to prevent progression. We explain all treatment options clearly, so you can make an informed decision. Schedule your appointment today to discuss whether your lesion needs removal.
Is skin cancer surgery painful?
We perform most procedures under local anaesthetic, ensuring you feel minimal discomfort during surgery. Post-procedure, your clinician will provide detailed aftercare instructions, including wound management and pain control, to keep you comfortable as you heal.
What treatment options are available if skin cancer is detected?
If skin cancer is identified, Dr. Chernoff will discuss tailored treatment options with you. Our Brisbane clinic offers various procedures, including surgical excision and advanced laser therapies, ensuring effective and personalised care. Early detection allows for less invasive treatments and better outcomes. Book a consultation to explore the best approach for your situation.
Will skin cancer surgery leave a scar?
All surgical procedures carry some risk of scarring. Dr Chernoff uses advanced surgical techniques to minimise scarring and promote optimal healing. Scar appearance depends on the lesion’s size, depth, and location, as well as your skin type. We provide personalised advice to support your recovery and cosmetic outcome.
Am I eligible for Medicare rebates or bulk-billing for skin cancer surgery?
Yes. Eligible patients can claim Medicare rebates for both skin checks and surgical procedures, and some appointments may be fully bulk-billed. This makes accessing timely, professional skin cancer care easier. Ask us about your eligibility when booking your appointment.
Do I need a GP referral for skin cancer surgery?
You can book a skin check directly at our clinic, or you can come with a GP referral. Either way, Dr Chernoff will guide you through assessment and treatment efficiently, ensuring no unnecessary delays.
How soon can surgery be scheduled after a skin check?
Once Dr Chernoff confirms a lesion requires removal, surgery can often be scheduled promptly at our Brisbane clinic. This ensures early treatment, reducing the risk of progression and giving you peace of mind. Book your assessment now to secure the earliest available surgery.
