How We Reduce the Appearance of Pores
Some people are born with naturally larger pores, while others notice them becoming more visible over time. Like skin itself, pores can stretch, and when oil, dead skin cells, or makeup repeatedly block them, the openings can widen. The result is skin that appears less smooth and more textured than you’d like, which can leave you feeling self-conscious or frustrated when you look in the mirror.
The good news? With the right combination of treatments and at-home care, the appearance of enlarged pores can be noticeably refined, helping your skin look smoother and restoring your confidence! If visible pores are bothering you, a personalised skin assessment is the first step. A clinician will evaluate your skin, recommend appropriate treatments, and create a safe homecare plan tailored to your goals.
What are enlarged or open pores?
Pores are tiny openings in the skin that release oil and sweat. “Enlarged” or “open” pores are simply pores that appear wider or more visible, usually because of oil production, loss of skin elasticity, or surface texture that makes the openings stand out. They’re common on the nose, cheeks and forehead.
Anyone can have visible pores. They’re more common and more obvious in people with oily or combination skin, those who spend a lot of time in the sun without protection, and people who have had moderate-to-severe acne in the past.
Why pores become more visible
- Increased sebum (oil) production. More oil can stretch the pore opening.
- Loss of collagen and elastin. Thinner, less elastic skin can’t hold the pore walls tight and they become “sagging pores”.
- Chromatic contrast & texture. Blackheads, trapped debris or rough texture cast shadows that make pores look bigger.
- Genetics and skin type. People with naturally oilier skin or certain ethnicities may have more visible pores.
- Age and sun damage. Cumulative UV exposure breaks down collagen and enlarges pore appearance.
- Past acne or scarring. Tethering and uneven texture can amplify pore visibility.
At home Daily routine to manange pores
Alongside professional treatments, consistent at-home care helps keep pores clear and skin smooth.
- Gentle daily cleansing twice a day; avoid harsh scrubs that can inflame skin.
- Oil-soluble cleansing step if you wear sunscreen or makeup.
- Regular, gentle chemical exfoliation (low-strength salicylic acid or lactic/glycolic acids) 1–3 times per week as tolerated.
- Retinoids (topical retinol or prescription retinoids) to increase cell turnover and build collagen. Start slowly.
- Non-comedogenic moisturisers to support barrier function.
- Daily broad-spectrum SPF30+ sunscreen to protect collagen and prevent worsening.

How we treat Enlarged Pores
For more significant refinement, targeted in-clinic treatments can help reduce the appearance of enlarged pores.
When it comes to addressing enlarged pores, we recommend a two-fold approach: first, a treatment that deeply cleanses and removes debris from inside the pores, and second, a clinical procedure that remodels and tightens the pore structure from within. Treatments we commonly offer include:
- Chemical Peels – Smooth skin texture and reduce oil-related congestion.
- Fractional Non-Ablative Lasers – Stimulate collagen and tighten pore walls.
- Carbon Facials – Refresh and refine the skin’s surface.
- Microneedling – Increase collagen and improve skin density.
- HydraFacial – Deeply cleanse, hydrate, and improve skin clarity.
- IPL Skin Rejuvenation – Improve texture and overall skin tone.
What results are realistic?
Pores cannot be permanently “closed”, they are anatomical openings. The goal of treatment is to reduce their appearance by improving skin texture, decreasing oil and increasing skin firmness. Many people see noticeable improvement after a course of treatments plus consistent home care; maintenance is usually required to keep results.
Myth: Pores can be permanently closed.
Fact: Pores can be made less visible, but they can’t be permanently sealed. Treating texture, oil and collagen gives the best cosmetic outcome.
Myth: Scrubbing harder will make pores smaller.
Fact: Harsh scrubbing irritates skin and can worsen appearance. Gentle, chemical exfoliation is more effective.
Enlarged pores treatment process at Queensland Skin & Laser
Consultation
Every journey begins with a personalised consultation. We assess your skin type, medical history, and discuss realistic expectations for your tailored plan.
Preparation
A consistent at-home routine sets the foundation for success. This usually includes a gentle cleanser, broad-spectrum sunscreen, and one active ingredient such as a retinoid or AHA/BHA.
Targeted clinic sessions
Professional treatments are scheduled based on your skin’s needs. Most people undergo 3–6 sessions of peels, lasers, microneedling, or a combination, spaced about 4 weeks apart. Texture improvements and reduced congestion are often noticeable within 2–8 weeks, while collagen remodeling, which tightens pore walls, may take 3–6 months. Downtime varies by treatment: superficial peels usually have minimal recovery, whereas lasers and deeper peels may require a few days.
Review & maintenance
To maintain results, we provide a personalised homecare plan and recommend occasional in-clinic touch-ups. This ensures long-term improvement in texture and pore appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions about enlarged pores treatment
Are enlarged pores caused by poor hygiene?
No. Pores are a natural part of the skin. Overwashing or using harsh cleansers can actually irritate the skin, potentially making pores appear more prominent. Gentle cleansing is key. For personalised advice on a daily routine that suits your skin type, book a consultation with our clinicians.
Will exfoliating daily fix enlarged pores?
Regular, gentle exfoliation can help reduce congestion and improve skin texture, but daily or aggressive exfoliation can damage the skin barrier. A tailored routine based on your skin type is recommended. Our skin experts can create a plan that balances at-home care with professional treatments. Schedule an assessment today.
Can makeup hide enlarged pores?
Yes. Certain primers and silicones can help blur the appearance of pores, and non-comedogenic foundations create a smoother-looking finish. Proper makeup removal is important to avoid clogging pores.
Are professional treatments safe for visible pores?
When performed by qualified clinicians and tailored to your skin type, professional treatments such as peels, lasers, or microneedling are generally safe. Your clinician will discuss potential risks and aftercare during your consultation. Book a consultation to explore which treatment options are most suitable for you.
How long do results last?
Results vary depending on the treatment, your skin type, and ongoing care. Maintaining a consistent homecare routine, including sunscreen and topical therapies, and occasional professional touch-ups can help prolong improvements. We can provide a personalised maintenance plan to keep your skin looking its best.
Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
