GLP-1 Weight Loss and Your Skin
Last updated on September 17, 2026
For many people using GLP-1 medications for weight management, reaching a healthier weight is an important achievement. However, as the weight comes off, the skin needs to adapt to changes in the underlying tissue. This can result in reduced firmness, loose skin, changes in facial volume and more noticeable lines and wrinkles. These concerns are becoming increasingly common in aesthetic and skin clinics. Patients are often happy with their weight-loss results but want to address changes in their skin that have become more noticeable along the way.
The rise of GLP-1 medications
GLP-1 receptor agonists have become increasingly common in the management of type 2 diabetes and weight-related health concerns. Their increasing use has also led to greater awareness of the changes that can occur following significant weight loss, including how significant weight loss can affect the skin.
Why does weight loss affect the skin?
Your skin changes as your body changes. Subcutaneous fat provides volume and support beneath the skin. When you lose a significant amount of weight, this underlying volume decreases. The skin then needs to adapt to a smaller underlying structure. When weight loss is substantial or occurs quickly, the skin may not fully retract.
This can result in:
- Reduced skin firmness
- Skin laxity
- Loose or excess skin
- Changes in skin texture
- More visible lines and wrinkles
Some people notice a relatively subtle change in firmness. Others develop more significant excess skin.
Why can the face look different after weight loss?
Facial changes are not simply about loose skin. The face contains several fat compartments that contribute to its shape and support. When facial fat volume decreases, there is less underlying volume supporting the skin. As a result, previously subtle lines and folds may become more noticeable. Changes in facial volume can also alter the appearance of the cheeks, temples, jawline and area beneath the eyes. This can make someone feel that their face suddenly looks older or more tired, even though they have achieved significant weight loss.
Can skin tightening treatments help?
In some cases, non-surgical treatments can improve the appearance of skin laxity following weight loss. However, the appropriate treatment depends on what has changed. Some patients have good skin quality but have experienced significant volume loss. Others have reduced firmness and laxity. Some have a combination of both. This distinction is important because tightening the skin and replacing lost volume are different treatment goals.
At Queensland Skin and Laser, some treatment options may include RF Microneedling, 1540nm Erbium Laser and HIFU, depending on the area being treated and the degree of laxity.
RF Microneedling
RF Microneedling combines controlled microneedling with radiofrequency energy delivered into the skin. The treatment creates controlled thermal effects within the skin, stimulating collagen remodelling. It can help improve skin firmness and texture and may reduce the appearance of wrinkles and scars. RF Microneedling can be performed on areas of the face and body, depending on the patient’s concerns and suitability for treatment.
1540nm Erbium Laser
The 1540nm Erbium Laser delivers controlled energy into the skin without removing the surface epidermis. It can help improve skin texture, fine lines and overall skin quality. Results develop gradually as the skin remodels. This makes it an option for patients who are looking for progressive improvements rather than a more intensive resurfacing treatment.
HIFU
HIFU uses focused ultrasound energy to deliver controlled energy to deeper tissue planes. Depending on the treatment area and individual assessment, it may be considered for mild skin laxity, including areas such as the lower face and neck. As with other non-surgical tightening treatments, HIFU cannot remove significant amounts of excess skin.
Combining treatments
Post-weight-loss skin changes are not always limited to one concern. You may have reduced firmness combined with changes in skin texture, fine lines or scarring. In these situations, combining treatments may allow different aspects of skin ageing to be addressed. For example, RF Microneedling may target collagen remodelling deeper within the skin, while laser treatments can address skin texture and fine lines.
The right combination depends on your skin and what you are hoping to improve.
What if there is significant excess skin?
Non-surgical treatments have limitations. If significant amounts of excess skin remain following substantial weight loss, energy-based treatments cannot simply remove that excess tissue. Surgical body contouring may be considered where there is substantial excess skin. Your doctor can discuss whether a surgical opinion may be appropriate for your circumstances.
It is important to have realistic expectations before starting treatment. Skin tightening treatments can improve the appearance of lax skin, but they cannot reproduce the result of surgical skin removal.
When should you consider treatment?
There is no single point in the weight-loss journey when everyone should begin skin treatments. If your weight is continuing to change significantly, your facial contours and body shape may continue to change as well. For some people, it may be appropriate to wait until their weight has stabilised before making decisions about more extensive treatment. For others, treatment may be appropriate earlier, particularly when the main concern is skin texture, fine lines or overall skin quality.
A consultation or advanced facial assessment allows us to assess what has changed and determine which options may be appropriate.
The Takeaway
Significant weight loss can be an important achievement, but your skin may need time and support to adapt to the changes underneath it. If you are noticing reduced firmness, changes in facial volume, wrinkles or loose skin, there are treatment options that may help improve skin quality and firmness. The right approach depends on what has changed, how much laxity is present and what you want to improve.
